We can help you decide when you should refer a student to our service, or adjust your course or examination arrangements to suit a student and we can provide you with resources to assist.
UniAccess disability officers are experienced at working with students with a broad range of medical conditions and disabilities. We can help you decide if and how to make a referral to our service. You do not have to disclose confidential information about the student. We can advise on reasonable adjustments, accessible course materials and physical access.
For a student registered with UniAccess, we will work with the student and academic staff to ensure that reasonable adjustments are made, enabling the student to participate in their education on the same basis as students without disability.
Often a student’s needs are best met by accessing a range of support services. After seeing a student we frequently assist them to access appropriate professional help by referring them to other Student Support Services or to appropriate external providers.

You have an obligation to take measures to assist students with a disability to participate on the same basis as other students.
The Disability Standards for Education (2005) provide guidance on what is a reasonable adjustment for educators to make for a student with a disability or medical condition. An adjustment is a measure or action taken to assist a student with disability to participate in education and training on the same basis as other students.
An adjustment is reasonable if it does this while taking into account the student’s learning needs and balancing the interests of all parties affected, including those of the student with the disability, the education provider, staff and other students.
In determining whether an adjustment is reasonable, an education provider should take into account:
Education providers have a positive obligation to make changes to reasonably accommodate the needs of a student with a disability. Guidance on what is expected of education providers to meet their obligations under the Disability Standards for Education (2005) can be found in the Disability Standards for Education Guidance Notes. You should not lower academic standards of the course or unit to accommodate the needs of any student but you may need to be flexible in relation to the way in which the program is delivered or assessed.
UWA has a responsibility to take reasonable steps to ensure that courses are assessed in such a way that any student with a disability is able to participate on the same basis as a student without disability.
Reasonable adjustments may involve alterations to the way the student is assessed in exams and other assessment tasks or situations such as placements, practical or laboratory classes or on-going assessment.
