Commonly used words

All material published by the University must use non-discriminatory language.

The University has adopted a policy on the use of non-discriminatory language. It offers many suggestions for replacing commonly used but discriminatory words. Some examples are:

average person (not 'common man')
workforce (not 'manpower')
nurse (not 'male nurse')

Where necessary, recast the sentence to avoid discriminatory language and maintain correct use of English and style.
