UWA Forward

Vice-Chancellor's Voice

Good morning. The Australian Research Council recently announced that UWA has been awarded $17.8 million in national research funding. The funding will go towards 41 new UWA research projects. And on Monday, the Minister for Health announced the National Health and Medical Research Council grants. I am happy to report that this year UWA was awarded a record number of five year grants. Congratulations to our outstanding research staff!

Also, I would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to read my paper, Securing Success, which has been downloaded just over 1300 times since we launched two weeks ago. Thanks especially to those who have provided feedback, either via our BlackBoard forum or to me directly. The forum will be open for the rest of November, so I encourage you to join the conversation. The Executive and I are keen to engage with and reply to your comments.

Sincerely,
Professor Paul Johnson
Vice-Chancellor

Pride and Theology

Duc Dau, a postdoctoral research fellow in English and Cultural Studies, knows a lot about the Bible – which is kind of surprising, considering she’s an atheist.

The Song of Songs’ emphasis on love conquering all is an important reason why same-sex attracted people have been, and continue to be, drawn to this text.

– Duc Dau

“I don’t think you have to be a believer to appreciate the Bible,” she said. “It’s a text with innumerable interpretative possibilities. It’s fascinating, diverse, can be read as literature and therefore affect you the way literature can.”
