UWA Forward

Vice-Chancellor's Voice

Good morning. This week I am in London meeting with some of our key research partners and alumni. Although I am travelling for work, I am reminded that the Christmas break will be here before we know it. I thought I would remind everyone that now is a good time to book your annual leave.

We all need a good break – the health and well-being benefits of taking leave are substantial. Time spent relaxing with friends and family, free from work distractions, has a positive effect on long-term health.

And this year, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day fall on a Thursday and Friday respectively. So booking leave for that week will mean you’ll get a good long break. When you come back to work, refreshed, you’ll be happier, healthier and more productive.

Sincerely,
Professor Paul Johnson
Vice-Chancellor

Student innovation shines through at the BloomLab

For Mark Shelton, a fourth year Bachelor of Philosophy (Hons) student, the Australian philosophy of ‘having a go’ has always been close to heart.

Bloom CEO Mark Shelton
with Fiona Crowe, Head of St Catherine’s College

In five years, we want it to be as natural for students to do their own start-up as to join a corporate graduate program.

– Mark Shelton

Mark is the founder of Bloom, a non-profit organisation that has just launched the BloomLab at St Catherine’s College, an innovative co-working space dedicated to assisting young West Australians to ‘have a go’ at launching startups, small businesses and social enterprises. It marks an exciting new stage in the development of innovation at UWA.
