UWA Forward

Vice-Chancellor's Voice

Good morning. Discovery and inspiration are at the heart of UWA’s mission to advance the welfare and prosperity of the people. UWA Research Week 2015, next week, provides the University with an opportunity to showcase our research and its contribution to local and global communities.

This year, more than 40 events will be held at UWA from 7-11 September. These include a fascinating photo exhibition, ‘Incredible Inner Space’, public talks such as Molecules of Love and Warfare, and the very popular Three-Minute Thesis Semi-Finals and Finals.

I encourage you to visit the Research Week website, explore the events on offer, sign up to sessions and encourage others to attend.

Sincerely,
Professor Paul Johnson
Vice-Chancellor

UWA Research Week: On the Frontline in the Fight to save the Honeybee

After nearly 20 years studying bees, Boris Baer, the Director of UWA’s Centre for Integrative Bee Research, knows a thing or two about our buzzing, black-and-yellow friend, Apis mellifera.

Dr Boris Baer

A hive is like a mirror of human society. Bees achieve and create the same way humans do – they collaborate, they have division of labour.

– Boris Baer

“I started my bee research when I was a PhD student,” said Boris. “That was with bumblebees in Europe. To be honest if you start to work with bees, after a couple of days you just fall in love. They’ll keep you busy for the rest of your life.”
