UWA Forward

Vice-Chancellor ’s Voice

Good morning. Last Friday, the 2016 Good Universities Guide* was released. I was pleased to see that UWA has received five stars for areas such as ‘student demand’, ‘starting salary’, ‘research grants’ and ‘research intensity’.

Unfortunately, we have retained a 1-star rating for ‘teaching’ and received a 1-star rating for ‘overall experience’, which is down from two stars last year.

Of course, we are taking a number of actions to improve our ratings for teaching quality. There’s some indication that these are starting to work. While the Good Universities Guide is certainly an important rating, it is based on data collected up to two years ago. Our SURF results, which are more immediate, show our highest level of student satisfaction since 2004.

Sincerely,
Professor Paul Johnson
Vice-Chancellor

Making the most of a Fay Gale Fellowship

It’s difficult to adjust to coming back to work after an extended period of parental leave. Just ask Michelle Teasdale, Senior Study Abroad Adviser in the Global Learning Office in Student Central.

I wanted to show my girls that mums can be many things and you can achieve your own goals.

Michelle returned to UWA in March 2012 after five-and-a-half years raising her three daughters – Luka, Ruby and Asha, now 8, 7 and 5 respectively.
