UWA Forward

Vice-Chancellor's Voice

Good morning. This week, I’m in South Korea where I’m speaking at the Global HR Forum before signing a cooperation agreement with our new strategic partner, Sungkyunkwan University. Our partnership will not only provide opportunities for UWA students, but will further establish our reputation as an international university.

We received some fantastic news last week. Our Aspire UWA outreach program was honoured with a Higher Education Equity and Opportunity Award from the Australian Financial Review. Our team at the Energy and Minerals Institute were finalists for AFR’s Industry Engagement Award.

Aspire UWA encourages students from low socio-economic, Indigenous and regional backgrounds to study at university. Since 2009, the program has engaged more than 40,000 students, teachers and families (the School of Indigenous Studies’ outreach program was featured in UWA Forward last month).

My congratulations to the Aspire UWA and EMI teams for this well-deserved recognition.

Sincerely,
Professor Paul Johnson
Vice-Chancellor

Louise Pollard tells ‘My second home – Timor Leste.’

Louise Pollard, Manager, Aspire UWA, is full of surprises. In addition to her role in Aspire, which was honoured with an AFR Higher Education Equity and Opportunity award last week, Louise spent two years in Timor Leste as a volunteer supported by the Australian government.

My time in Timor Leste was such a fundamental time in my life! Full of amazing memories and adventures.

– Louise Pollard

Louise first fell in love with Timor Leste during a short visit in 2006. The next year she began as a volunteer with Austraining International in the country’s Ministry of Education, supporting the director of teacher training. But Louise soon found her role was much broader than expected.
