UWA Forward

Vice-Chancellor's Voice

Good morning. Last week, the Australian Research Council released the results of the Excellence in Research for Australia evaluation, which details the quality of Australian university research benchmarked against world standards.

It was pleasing to see that all our research was broadly classified as being at world standard or better. We’re exceptionally strong in Science, with five star ratings in four fields of research: psychology and cognitive sciences, biological sciences, environmental science and physical sciences. Seventeen of our specific fields of research were also rated five stars – well above world standard. Congratulations to our research staff for this achievement, and our professional and technical staff for the support that made it possible.

I’m looking forward to seeing you this afternoon at my End of Year address and, of course, I’ll see you on Friday at the Christmas Party.

Sincerely,
Professor Paul Johnson
Vice-Chancellor

UWA’s Swim Star on the Rise

Holly Barratt, a Science student here at UWA, has been named the 2015 Female Athlete of the Year, one of the highest Australian university sporting honours.

We have a saying, ‘Think about the process, not the outcome.’ In a race, I’m thinking about getting off the block as fast as I can, getting in the water the right way, getting my breathing right and all the things I need to do to be the fastest I can be.

– Holly Barratt

The 27-year-old was honoured with the award for her achievements in swimming this year. She said that although her swimming has really improved over the last few years the award was still a complete surprise.
