UWA Forward

Vice-Chancellor's Voice

Good morning and welcome to the “Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor’s Voice” as I fill in while Paul’s on two weeks’ leave.

Every semester, UWA students evaluate their units via the Student Unit Reflective Feedback (SURF) survey. In a typical year, students submit over 50,000 evaluations of approximately 1500 units.

The SURF results for Semester 1, 2015, have just been processed. I’m pleased to report further improvement on last year’s high scores. Last year, the percentage of units rated excellent was an all-time high, and the percentage of units needing improvement was the lowest since 2006.

Thank you to all our staff working towards improving students’ satisfaction with their UWA education. While there’s still work to be done, these results are a very positive achievement.

Sincerely,
Professor Dawn Freshwater
Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor

NAIDOC Week: The flight path of Angel

Every student embarks on a unique journey of discovery. For Angel Hayward, the journey may just be starting.

Angel Hayward
by the River Liffey, Dublin

My parents and grandparents have struggled, but their lives have given me direction. It’s because of them that I’m who I am, and where I am, today.

Angel came to the School of Indigenous Studies (SIS) at UWA in 2011 as a Bachelor of Arts student. When she completed her degree in 2014 SIS was reluctant to let her go. She is now a staff member with the School’s Outreach team, inspiring future Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
