UWA Forward

Vice-Chancellor's Voice

Good morning. On Friday, the University was delighted to welcome the first round of Forrest scholarship winners to Western Australia.

The students, from Mexico, Vietnam, France, Singapore and the US, represent some of the best and brightest of their generation. They are young people of fierce talent, energy and intellect and I was proud to welcome them to our community as they pursue their doctoral research at UWA.

Thanks to the generosity of Andrew and Nicola Forrest, the University is better able to attract some of the very brightest people from around the world to create a powerhouse of ideas here in Perth, and to advance the development of our state, our society and our culture.

Sincerely,
Professor Paul Johnson
Vice-Chancellor

Forward Focus

Imaging Probe

It’s not quite Inner Space or Fantastic Voyage but it’s not far off. Research Associate Professor Robert McLaughlin and Professor David Sampson are leading a team from UWA’s School of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering to create Australia’s (and possibly the world’s) tiniest imaging probe to assess burns victims.

It is the first time anyone in the world has tried to 3D print a lens of its kind, and opens up new possibilities for future medical devices.

Researchers Péter Fejes, Rodney Kirk and Bryden Quirk are designing and building the imaging probe as part of a collaboration between UWA and internationally renowned burns expert Professor Fiona Wood, with funding from Chevron.
