UWA Forward

Vice-Chancellor's Voice

Good morning. The Vice-Chancellor is on leave this week and in China next week so I am acting VC while he is away.

The University's Albany campus has been a regional teaching hub since 1999 and is a close-knit community that provides a supportive learning environment for school-leavers and mature-age students alike. I'm looking forward to visiting the campus on Friday where I will meet a variety of Albany staff and attend a ceremony recognising students who have been awarded regionally focused grants and scholarships.

Today I will host several State Government Ministers at an event featuring the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, and earlier this week we were pleased to welcome the Federal Minister for Education Simon Birmingham onto campus. The Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop was also at UWA this week launching the Western Australian chapter of the New Colombo Plan Alumni Program. With state and federal elections just around the corner we welcome these opportunities to engage with Members of Parliament.

Sincerely,
Professor Dawn Freshwater
Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Registrar

Forward Focus

The history and future of the Berndt Museum

Dr Vanessa Russ, the Berndt Museum's first Aboriginal Associate Director, certainly isn't one to shy away from a challenge. With a collection that encompasses more than 11,500 objects and 35,000 photographs, the museum's archives also represent an amazing asset in itself, making the Berndt the envy of other universities.

Dr Vanessa Russ

The honour and pride of managing a collection that will go on for over 100 years cannot be undervalued, and all going to plan we will never reap the full benefits. We will plant trees that we will never see, but they will benefit future generations and UWA will always be central to that.

Dr Vanessa Russ

Vanessa believes that while the Berndt Museum is something to be treasured now, more discussion must be had about how it's shaped for tomorrow.
