UWA Forward

Vice-Chancellor's Voice

Good morning. A big thank you to everyone involved in a fantastic Open Day on Sunday. Campus was buzzing with thousands of visitors enjoying a fun and informative day and it was great to see so many of you there.

On Monday I was pleased to announce that UWA had retained its position as a top 100 university. After further analysis I can confirm the main driver for our ranking shift was due to a change in the highly cited researcher indicator. This year the indicator relied solely on the current highly cited researcher list, rather than combining the current and old lists. This greatly benefited many universities but UWA less so.

As I said, it is an ongoing challenge to remain in the top 1% of universities world-wide and this result is an achievement we can all be proud of.

Sincerely,
Professor Paul Johnson
Vice-Chancellor

Renewal Project Update

The build phase of the Service Delivery Project is progressing well. The work has included further consultation with Faculty Managers and other senior academic and professional colleagues to develop a detailed design of the proposed professional services model for the University.

Thank you to everyone who has provided feedback to date. This input during the detailed design process has been valuable and I encourage everyone to continue providing their thoughts on the recommendations made by the work streams to renewal-feedback@uwa.edu.au. We are working towards presenting a proposal to staff by the end of August, when you’ll be able to provide further feedback within the formal consultation process.

Sincerely,
Professor Dawn Freshwater
Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Registrar

Forward Focus

Sparking innovation and commercialisation

Born and bred in Perth, surgeon scientist Dr Peter Santa Maria completed his medical undergraduate degree at UWA in 2001, followed by a PhD focused on ear drum wound healing and ear, nose and throat surgical training.

with his SPARK co-Director

Australia has what it takes to be at the forefront of innovation, but currently we don't have a good record when it comes to commercialising our world-class research.

Yet it could be said that his three years at Stanford University from 2012-2015 were just as influential in shaping the rising trajectory of his career.

Read more about Dr Santa Maria's experience at Stanford and how he's bringing SPARK to Perth.
