UWA Forward

Vice-Chancellor's Voice

Good morning. Last week I was pleased to attend the State Government's Innovation Summit, which brought together leaders across politics, industry and research to discuss how we can further enhance WA's position as an innovation leader. It was pleasing to see many staff, students and graduates involved in this important conversation and UWA also featured predominantly in the video played at the opening of the summit.

There was strong agreement in the room that further embracing a culture of innovation, science and research is vital to the State's future economic success and social wellbeing. As a university we will play an important role in this, especially our efforts to more deeply engage with business and industry. The discussion will lead to the development by the government of the State's first innovation strategy.

Sincerely,
Professor Paul Johnson
Vice-Chancellor

Renewal Project Update

Thank you to everyone who has been providing feedback following the Renewal Open Forum on 22 July and the publication of the work stream reports.

The build phase for the service delivery project has now commenced, with external support from PricewaterhouseCoopers, who are working with the UWA project team and the Service Delivery Design and Implementation Group to develop the detailed design of the proposed professional services delivery model.

The process will involve continued consultation and engagement over the forthcoming weeks, in preparation for sharing a formal proposal with staff towards the end of August. The Extended Executive and the Renewal project team continue to finalise the details of the academic restructure project, and your continued feedback is welcome on both projects to renewal-feedback@uwa.edu.au.

Sincerely,
Professor Dawn Freshwater
Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Registrar

Forward Focus

Ensuring Open Day runs with military precision

As one of UWA's Events Officers, Rilana Ostheim has a keen eye for detail and knows what it takes to get things done. She's part of the team dedicated to showcasing the best of what UWA has to offer with successful events such as Open Day and the Career Advisers' Breakfast.

As a Public Relations Officer in the Navy Reserves I'm able to use the skills and experience I've gained throughout my career in a new, challenging context

Rilana Ostheim

However when she's not working hard to bring the UWA experience to life, you'll find Rilana's time and dedication are devoted to something quite different – her Navy Reservist training.
