UWA Forward

Vice-Chancellor's Voice

Good morning. This May we are busy building further ties with our nearest neighbour. I was in Jakarta last week as part of a delegation led by WA Minister for Education Peter Collier to promote our higher education sector and highlight future opportunities for collaboration. Also in Jakarta is In the Zone which takes place on Saturday and is being hosted by UWA Honorary Professor Dr Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. This year's theme, Feeding the Zone focuses on agriculture and food security and asks how we can position ourselves to properly feed and nourish peoples across the Indo-Pacific now and in the future.

Events like these emphasise the importance of the Indonesia-WA relationship and support further cooperation and engagement between governments, industry and education partners.

Sincerely,
Professor Paul Johnson
Vice-Chancellor

Renewal Project Update

Last Friday, the Extended Executive which comprises the Executive and all Faculty Deans approved the project plans for each renewal work stream. They are now available for staff to view here. These documents summarise the priorities that each stream has embedded into their work, including a plan for staff consultation and engagement. New FAQs in relation to the evaluation of academic roles are also now available.

I would also like to advise staff that we have scheduled an Open Forum on Friday 22 July at 1pm in the Octagon Theatre. Whilst there will be a number of individual work stream engagement sessions prior to this date, it is our intention to use this forum to provide staff with an update on the design of the new academic structure and service delivery model based on the outcomes of the work streams.

Sincerely,
Professor Dawn Freshwater
Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Registrar

Forward Focus

Professor of Entrepreneurship getting down to business

Entrepreneurship and innovation. Two big words starting to make an even bigger impact at UWA and Professor Thierry Volery is right there in the thick of it all.

Professor Volery

We have a vibrant community of start-ups and incubators here in Perth. If the resource boom is ending, then what's the next thing? It makes sense for the University to increase its engagement with business.

Professor Volery

As UWA's Professor of Entrepreneurship and Head of Marketing in the Business School, Professor Volery wears two hats and has a portfolio of different roles. While born and bred in Switzerland, he started his career in Perth so when he returned at the beginning of the year it was somewhat of a homecoming.

Read more about Professor Volery's initial thoughts about innovation at UWA.
