UWA Forward

Vice-Chancellor's Voice

Good morning. I want to highlight some outstanding results achieved recently by our researchers. Professor Sharon Parker from the Business School was awarded a prestigious Australian Research Council Fellowship at the beginning of May receiving $2.9 million to continue her research on the changing nature of work. ARC also awarded 10 grants worth a total of more than $5 million to the University as part of a program to promote industry-university linkages.

This month UWA also secured the majority of funding from the State Government's Merit Award, a program aimed at boosting research capability in WA. Congratulations Sharon and all the teams involved for their continued contribution to outstanding research at UWA.

From research to running man, last week UWA laid down the gauntlet to our WA university counterparts. The video has been popular online and viewed more than 36,000 times on Facebook.

Sincerely,
Professor Paul Johnson
Vice-Chancellor

Forward Focus

Australia, almost the Canada of the south

When UWA Honorary Research Fellow Noelene Bloomfield joined the University in 1968 to take up a senior tutor position in the French department her classes were mostly focused on the French language.

Noelene Bloomfield

If the French Revolution hadn't occurred in 1789, Australia could easily have looked more like Canada, with a French and an English side. It would have been a very different region to the one we live in today

Noelene Bloomfield

As her research progressed, French culture and history started to play a larger role, however little did she know how all three aspects would merge into a lifelong passion.
