UWA Forward

Vice-Chancellor's Voice

Good morning. On Monday I informed you of my decision to leave the Vice-Chancellorship at the end of the year. This was not an easy decision to make but it is the right one for me and my family.

I understand some of you are concerned about the timing of my departure during the Renewal Project. We have achieved a lot this year and are now in the final stages of building our new faculty structures, which will be taken to Senate for ratification in October.

The implementation phase for our new professional services structure will begin in December with the new arrangements commencing on 1 January next year. I have every confidence that the Executive team, including our newly appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor & Executive Deans, will successfully oversee this. With this important phase of the project to be completed before the end of this year, I believe this presents a suitable time for me to move on.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at UWA and I want to thank you all again for your hard work and commitment to this great university.

Sincerely,
Professor Paul Johnson
Vice-Chancellor

Science communication – the next generation

Hot on the heels of Dr Karl's UWA Research Week event on Monday, Dr Gail Alvares from the Telethon Kids Institute is proving that the future of science communication is in good hands.

Dr Gail Alvares

When I think about how to communicate my research, I think about how I can explain this in a way that people will be genuinely interested in.

As one of Radio National's top five science communicators under 40, Dr Alvares knows how important it is to communicate clearly to her patients, their parents and the wider community.

In this video Gail talks about her role in the Autism Research team and discusses why being able to communicate research outcomes on a day to day basis is a vital skill for researchers.
